Paper industry biocides

In paper making, our biocides are used to control slime build-up in the process water. This ensures that the paper mill machinery runs efficiently and the subsequent finished paper is free from contamination and spoilage. In addition, we supply specialised products to protect water-based mill additives such as starch, pigments, sizes and mineral slurries.

Environmental profile of biocides for the paper industry:

Protectol® BN (Bronopol)
Bronopol does not accumulate in the environment and has been shown to be inherently biodegradable. Under normal use conditions, Bronopol will not cause problems either to effluent treatment plants or to the environment following discharge into wastewater.  Bronopol is toxic to algae and daphnia but less toxic to fish.  The log Pow is low, indicating that Bronopol has a low potential to bioaccumulate. In the E.U., Bronopol is classified as dangerous for the environment (R50).

Protectol® GA 50 / Protectol® GA 24 (Glutaraldehyde)
Glutaraldehyde has been shown to be readily biodegradable and has a low potential to bioaccumulate. Under normal use conditions, Glutaraldehyde will not cause problems either to effluent treatment plants or to the environment following discharge into wastewater. Glutaraldehyde is harmful to fish and daphnia but is very toxic to algae.

Protectol® HT (Triazine)
1,3,5-Tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-hexahydrotriazine is  readily biodegradable. However, under normal use conditions, the product should not be discharged into waterways without prior treatment.
1,3,5-Tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3,5-hexahydrotriazine is harmful to fish and daphnids.

Protectol® DZ (Dazomet)
Dazomet is readily biodegradable.  Under normal use conditions, Dazomet will not cause problems either to effluent treatment plants or to the environment following discharge into wastewater. Dazomet has, however, been shown to be very toxic to fish and daphnia but is less toxic to algae.

Protectol® DB (Dibromonitrilopropionamide (DBNPA))
Dibromonitrilopropionamide generally hydrolyses rapidly in water through aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. It is of moderate toxicity to terrestrial mammals and birds if they are exposed orally to concentrated doses but under usual circumstances, dietary toxicity to birds is low. Without any mitigation measures, DBNPA poses a high risk to aquatic organisms. In the E.U., it is classified as dangerous for the environment with risk phrase; R50 - very toxic to aquatic organisms.

Odour control and chemical sanitation

Our biocides control odour in portable toilet fluids and animal litter formulations.  Here our products are chosen for their excellent biocidal activity and ability to help control the generation of noxious and unpleasant odours.  Superior biodegradability of our biocides also ensures minimum impact on the environment.

Industrial product preservation

In this wide-ranging application area our products offer biocidal performance when used either alone or in combination with other actives.  Applications include the preservation of water-based paints, polymer dispersions, inks, fountain solutions, adhesives, caulks, sealants and many other industrial fluids.  In engineering plants our biocides preserve metalworking fluids and in leather soak liquors they protect the hides from blemishes caused by bacterial attack. Our products are even used in formulations sold with cut flowers to keep them fresh and free from bacterial contamination.

Environmental profile of biocides for industrial product preservation:

Protectol® BN (Bronopol)
Bronopol does not accumulate in the environment and has been shown to be inherently biodegradable. Under normal use conditions, Bronopol will not cause problems either to effluent treatment plants or to the environment following discharge into wastewater.  Bronopol is toxic to algae and daphnia but less toxic to fish.  The log Pow is low, indicating that Bronopol has a low potential to bioaccumulate. Glutaraldehyde is harmful to fish and daphnia but is very toxic to algae.

Protectol® PE / Protectol® PE S (Phenoxyethanol)
Phenoxyethanol is readily biodegradable.  Experience gained in running effluents into adapted biological treatment plants has shown that concentrations of up to 1000mg/l are unlikely to disturb the efficacy of activated sludge.  Phenoxyethanol is of a low acute toxicity to fish and daphnia.

Protectol® TD (Tetramethylolacetylene diurea)
When used as recommended, tetramethylolacetylene diurea will cause no inhibition of activated sludge in sewage treatment plants.

Protectol® DA (Dichlorobenzyl alcohol (DCBA))
2,4-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol is of low to moderate acute toxicity to daphnia and fish and is of low acute toxicity to birds.
2,4-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol is not classified as dangerous to the aquatic environment.

Protectol® KD (Potassium HDO (K-HDO))
N-cyclohexyl-diazenium dioxide, potassium salt, is readily eliminated from water. Under normal use conditions, inhibition of degradation activity in activated sludge is not expected when the product is correctly introduced at low concentrations.

Phenoxypropanol is of low toxicity to fish and daphnia but it is harmful to algae. Phenoxypropanol is not likely to bioaccumulate due to a low log Pow.

Protectol® GL (Glyoxal)
Glyoxal is readily biodegradable. Effluent discharge into sewage treatment plants has shown that concentrations of up to 1000mg/l are unlikely to disturb the efficacy of activated sludge. In acute studies, Glyoxal is not hazardous to algae, daphnia or fish. A low octanol / water coefficient also indicates a low potential to bioaccumulate.

Water and oilfield biocides

In oilfield applications BASF’s biocides can be used in drilling muds, injection waters, fracturing and completion fluids.  They are often added to production waters to prevent microbial spoilage within the oil recovery process and to control souring and corrosion caused by sulphate reducing bacteria.

In water treatment applications our biocides are used to reduce biofouling and to control microbial contamination and the spread of potentially pathogenic micro-organisms such as Legionella spp. Specific applications include industrial process water, cooling water, air washers and humidifiers, air conditioning units, heat exchangers, condensers and pasteurizers.

Environmental profile of water and oilfield biocides:

Protectol® BN (Bronopol)
Bronopol does not accumulate in the environment and has been shown to be inherently biodegradable.
